This weekend 2nd, 3rd & 4th of August Southport Yacht Club (SYC) is hosting the biggest come together of disabled sailors, racing the fformer Paralympic class SKUD 18 yachts, since the lead up race for the Rio games. Racing south of Crab and north of Wave Break Islands on the Broadwater’s Deep Hole. Competitors from Melbourne, Sydney and Gold Coast including Rio and London Gold medalist Daniel Fitzgibbon will compete for the 2019 Australian Para Sailing Championships.
Local sailor Ross Manning President of Queensland Para Sailing Academy (QPSA) and current National Champion is pleased to say that “although for reasons unknown Paralympic sailing being kicked out of Paralympic competition the class is still strong here in Australia. With the help of Southport Yacht Club and Sailability Gold Coast our less abled sailor are thriving and thoroughly harnessing Gold Coast waterways and the freedom and independence in the sport of sailing”.
Hansa class 303 are also competing with great viewing of the racing from Anglers Esplanade Runaway Bay, racing from 1pm Friday and 11am Saturday and Sunday. Southport Yacht Club Sailing Squadron 1 Marina crs Hollywell welcomes anybody wanting to come and view/support people with disabilities racing these awesome yachts.
