Regatta Heritage:

Those not familiar with the legacy of Ted Elkes memorial their family wife Eunice children John & Julie were almost the heart and soul of the Air Sea Rescue organisaton for almost 40 years. His son John inherited the same panache with the handling of the boats, and took over the operational side of the group after his father. Some of the most memorable rescues were a result of John’s ability behind the wheel of a boat, the “John Elkes Beacon” named in his honor. The sudden death of Ted in 1982 the organisation took delivery of a 5.5 mtr centre console & named it in his honor, in 1989 this was replaced with a Haines Hunter and named “TK Elkes 2”

In 1987 a new facility was opened beside Sea World where VMR is today. It was through the efforts of the late John Humm, John Stanfield, Peter Quirk and local government ministers that brought the facility into reality. The Honorable RJ Hinze M.L.A. minister for Main Roads, Local Government & Racing (at the time) officially opened the base. From there, “THE TED ELKES RESCURE CENTRE” was born 25 years later it became “THE ELKES FAMILY RESCURE CENTRE”.

Each year SYC holds a memorial yachting event to honour Ted.
