QOIN SAIL PARADISE REGATTA 2023 WRAP-UP
Overall, Sail Paradise was a true success. The sailors competed fiercely, the yachts were incredible to watch and the spinnakers were beautiful and captivating. The regatta brought a sense of excitement and energy to the Gold Coast, and it was a testament to the power of sailing to bring people together and create unforgettable memories. We can’t wait for the next year’s Sail Paradise.
Congratulations to all participants, and a BIG Thank you to all sponsors, volunteers and all involved!

The Paper Tiger Catamaran 52nd Australian Championships
The Paper Tigers National Championships, held over the last 5 days at Southport Yacht Club in Hollywell, was a spectacular display of sailing talent and sportsmanship. The event featured fierce competition between sailors from all over Australia, all vying for the title of National Champion in the Paper Tiger class of catamarans. The Paper Tiger is a popular racing class known for its low-cost, ease of construction, and ease of sailing, making it accessible for sailors of all ages and skill levels.
The races took place offshore in the ocean near Main Beach Gold Coast, the sailors were put to the test as they navigated the challenging course set by the event organizers, where the waves and winds were strong. Spectators were treated to an exciting display of skill and precision as the sailors expertly maneuvered their boats around the buoys, “setting their sails to catch every breath of wind.”
As the races progressed, the competition became increasingly intense, with sailors pushing their boats and themselves to the limit in an effort to secure a spot on the podium. The strong winds and waves made it an extra challenging event, but the sailors were able to handle the conditions with experience and skill. In the end, two boats stood out as the top competitors, GON WILD and FLYN BRYN. Both boats sailed an impressive race and the crews should be commended for their hard work and dedication. However, one of them managed to edge out the other in the end to take the title of National Champion in their respective categories.
Southport Yacht Club commends everyone on giving their all to such a great event. Hope to see you all again soon.
THIS WEEK @ OXENFORD WATERSPORT CENTRE AND SQUAD UPDATE
Sailor of the week
Lucas Dickson is this week’s sailor of the week
Lucas started sailing in Tackers 1 and has excelled through the sailing programs at SYC. Now a member of the squad team at Hollywell.
Lucas in his boat Sonic has been representing SYC and sponsor by the Moreton Group frequenting regattas in North Queensland and is currently sailing in the Opti National Championships at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club in NSW.
Lucas at just 9 years old embodies the spirit of SYC focusing on performance as well as fun. He is also the first to lend a hand to less experienced sailors, well done Lucas!!
ENJOYING THE TRIP BACK HOME
Rod West and the Bosun’s Locker team raced in the Qoin Sail Paradise and enjoyed sailing in the recent regatta.
Änd mentioned that” the race was great for us. 5th in Division in the end. We are 3rd for large portions of the race until we blew our big spinnaker and then we fell off the pace a bit. The boat and crew did really well. Should be home next Tuesday.”
They are now taking their time and having a wonderful trip back. Thank you Rod! Have a fantastic adventure and a safe journey on your way home!
