O’pen Skiff Manly Cup (inc. NSW O’pen Skiff State Championships
By Addison Newlan
I recently travelled to Sydney to compete in the O’pen skiff Manly Cup, incorporating the New South Wales O’pen Skiff State Champs. With 8 to 10 knots of an oscillating South Easterly, day one was a success managing to get in 5 races over two sessions. Day 2 brought on a slightly building breeze this time coming more from the North East with another 5 races and the racing was close. With 28 competitors in Gold Fleet, the first three places went to: Corrando Dorrington, Addison Newland and Jonah Griffiths – well done to everyone that competed.

THIS WEEK @ OXENFORD WATERSPORT CENTRE AND SQUAD UPDATE
Update provided by Michaela Hanson
Success is like an iceberg!
It’s easy, when you can’t see it, to miss what goes on after the hatch has been closed on sailing at SYC Oxenford. Every week and during quieter periods before and after sailing courses have been completed, the team members at SYC Oxenford undertake numerous non-sailing tasks that keep our venue and boats operational. From the manager to the mentor, everyone chips in so that this ship can keep sailing smoothly. “Teamwork divides the tasks and multiplies the success”
A Hive of Activity
As a public venue, SYC Oxenford regularly hosts a diverse range of events, functions and courses. Last weekend it was a hive activity with an energetic and vibrant atmosphere that would bring a smile to anyone’s face. Outside the Jack Beasley Foundation held their annual walk with nearly 300 participants, Christmas celebrations were held for the Gold Coast Mens Walk n Talk, the Oxenford Rowing Club and Any Shape Fitness. We were also hosts to our first Australian Sailing Windsurfing Instructors Course. So, pop down, say hi and have a look around and see the diversity at SYC Oxenford. There is always something going on! [Insert photos – walk with jack, walk n talk and windsurfing course photos x 2]
Volunteering makes a big difference
In 2023, SYC Oxenford is planning to develop and expand on their volunteer program. We are looking to engage front of house volunteers who can commit and join us on Saturday or a Sunday. The set hours are 9am-3pm which can be split into morning and afternoon shifts of 3 hours to suit availability. Ideally, we would prefer females as this will help bring more balance to the male:female ratio and team dynamic. The role includes meeting and greeting customers, checking students in for their courses, engaging in conversation and promoting the programs we run at all SYC venues. All training will be provided. SYC Oxenford has a huge public audience that we hope to capture and retain in 2023. If you’re interested and would like to know more please email your contact details to volunteers@sycgc.com.au
Sailor of the week
Congratulations to Jack McGuire who is our sailor of the week.
Young Jack has come through the junior ranks from Oxenford Tackers to Junior Green Fleet at Hollywell. Jack has always displayed an outstanding attitude and approach to sailing with a sense of humour, whether it’s his own sailing or helping others. Jack completed Sail Brisbane on the weekend at RQ and placed 2nd overall, an outstanding achievement. Well done Jack, keep up the great work.
