BARTERCARD SAIL PARADISE REGATTA

Entries are now open for the Southport Yacht Club’s spectacular offshore sailing regatta, Bartercard Sail Paradise, staged over three huge days this Kings Birthday October long weekend, September 30 to October 2, 2023.

In its 14^th year, the three-day spectacular event sees skippers and crew travel from all parts of Australia with magnificent racing staged on the beautiful ocean waters off our stunning Gold Coast.

Races will be sailed on Windward/Leeward and Ocean Passage Courses on the waters off Main Beach and Surfers Paradise and there will be many shoreline vantage points for spectators to take in the racing and the blaze of colour that will come from the yachts’ many and varied spinnakers.

The regatta will take in seven divisions over three days with the divisions being

Monohull IRC/ORC
Monohull Performance Racing PHS/ORC
Monohull Cruising – Spinnaker (PHS)
Monohull Cruising – Non-Spinnaker (PHS)
Monohull 2 Handed Division IRC/ORC
Multihull Racing (OMR)
Multihull Cruising (PHS)

“Support from our sponsors means Southport Yacht Club can deliver a premier regatta that will attract crew from all over to our shores and experience all the Gold Coast has to offer.” He adds.

The Gold Coast is encouraged to come down to the Southport Yacht Club each night to see the spectacular yachts moored up and catch the live entertainment, or grab a vantage point along our spectacular beaches from the Spit southward.

‘WONDERS OF THE WHARF’

Fantastic to see our Iain and his eager learners from the Jacobs Well Environmental Education Centre back studying their ‘Wonders of the Wharf’ program at Hollywell on Saturday. A picture-perfect day!

We know the future of our waterways are in good hands with these enthusiastic students.

As we near the end of Autumn, our sailors have started to experience a variety of weather conditions. From light to stronger wind, and sun to rainy conditions for sailing. Winter can be a challenging time for individuals to continue to attend and enjoy themselves on the water, so it’s been great to see participants start to check the weather so they can dress appropriately to continue enjoying sailing all year round.

On Sunday 14th, we held our monthly She Sails event celebrating Mother’s Day with participants aged 10yrs to 70yrs+. A big shout out to the ladies who sailed through the rain and to our band of female and male volunteers who continually support us and made it a special day for all.

SAILOR of the WEEK

This week we highlight two of our Wednesday Homeschool sailors, Joseph and Antoino Bonica. The brothers joined us for the first time this term and have excelled in the Out There Program sailing in both Hobie Wave Catamarans and RS Quests. They come prepared every week having spent time at home learning from their course booklet and are actively working towards building their skills and knowledge. Their goal is to get to a stage where they can join the Out There Program at Hollywell. Congratulations boys, we look forward to supporting you as you progress in your sailing journey with SYC.

MEET OUR INSTRUCTORS

This week we are pleased to introduce you to Jack Wallace. Jack is one of our more experienced and long-term instructors at SYC who is currently at university completing his nursing qualification. He has been sailing since he was very young and has been an instructor at SYC Oxenford and Hollywell for the past six years. He began sailing Optis racing at both state and national levels before moving into lasers, sailing at youth week and Yepoon. He tells us that lasers are probably his favourite boat!

During high school Jack was unable to continue squad and club racing but after graduating he moved into sailing OK dinghies and SKUD 18’s with the QLD parasailing academy in 2019. Doing this has been a great opportunity for him to build spinnaker skills and two up sailing. Jack continues to sail SKUD’s on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the inshore division and with his effervescent personality, Jack is a valued member of our instructing team.
