LASER METROPOLITAN CHAMPIONSHIPS SAILING
By: Matt Sinnamon – Junior Vice Commodore
The ILCA Metropolitan Championships at RQYS included a total of 45 lasers, who sailed 5 races. There were a total of 16 sailors in the ILCA 4 fleet, 17 in the ILCA 6’s and 12 in the ILCA 7’s.
The wind conditions varied from day one to two, with 15+ knots on day one, and day two slowly dropping off to around 5 knots.
Launching and landing of boats at RQYS was much different in comparison to SYC, as sailors had to make their way through the marina before reaching the racecourse.
The SYC crew had a great time over the two-day regatta, including getting together on Saturday night at the local pub for dinner.

Hollywell Weekends
By Mick Scharf
Saturday Keelboat Session – Saturday afternoon at SYC Hollywell greeted the participants of the keelboat session with a very light breeze. Two sailors were backing it up after their KBC (Keelboat course) from last week and loving being back out on the Broadwater. It’s great to see new and returned sailors who’ve come through our SYC Learn To Sail programs. Thanks to Lorri for these awesome photos!
Saturday Green Fleet Session – It was another awesome day to be out training with the next up and coming cat sailors from OutThere Green Fleet Hollywell, with 16 teenagers eager to see what the coaches had for them this week.
Sunday Green Fleet Session – Another cracker of morning greeted the Green Fleet last Sunday with light winds and a big run out tide testing the squad. The coaches did some training towing all the kids on a train to a quiet beach and played some sailing games with some on-water sail training to round off the morning.
You can find out more about all our learn to sail programs on the SYC website at this link.
Oxenford Weekends
By Caela Hanson
Social Sailing – Sunday at SYC Oxenford saw the morning taken up with a group of male social sailors going out solo on Quests and Hobies learning race starts and rules. All have been through our Adult Learn to Sail courses and onto keelboats. They return to social sailing each month to practise skills in a safe environment and different conditions, with Sunday morning’s session giving them the opportunity to refine and improve their skills in light winds.
She Sails – Sunday afternoon was filled with lots of fun as 12 ladies jumped on board for our monthly She Sails event. We had a nice mix of those new to sailing and others who have been in our tribe for over a year.
This month we introduced racing flags and a ‘go rougue’ challenge! During the social, we discussed the pathways available. A fantastic day and huge thanks to volunteers Georgia and Jayne.
