YACHTING NEWS
TEAM UPDATE
Congratulations to all 29 of our SYC Academy Sailors who proudly represented SYC at the 2024 Zhik Youth Sail Queensland held at the stunning Keppel Bay Sailing Club in Yeppoon!
This year’s regatta not only showcased our sailors’ talents but also marked a great milestone in youth sailing in Australia. The event broke attendance records, becoming the largest event of its kind in Australia, welcoming an impressive 280 young sailors, 33 coaches, 5 Olympians, and over 70 dedicated volunteers from across the country.
Youth Sail is focused on growing participation in junior and youth classes, increasing sailors’ skills, fostering social connections, and building friendship and community between our youth sailors. It is a 3-day training camp followed by a 3-day regatta conducted by qualified instructors/foundation coaches.
It was a rare experience to rub shoulders with Olympic Sailors. Our Sailor had the opportunity to meet Olympic silver medallist Grae Morris Men’s Windsurfer (iQFOiL) and fellow Paris 2024 Olympian Brei Whitehead Kitefoil racing. Mara Stransky Sailing Women’s single-person Laser at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Matt Belcher Australian sailor and a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 470 dinghy.
For many SYC Cadets, it was their first time sailing in their class.
