Day one of the 470 class National Championships commenced on Wednesday 11th February, with the six time World Champion and Olympic Gold Medallist Mathew Belcher and crew Will Ryan taking out the number one place in both races.
‘Being the first time I have raced at my home Club for nearly a decade, and the first time racing in Australia for over a year, I am ecstatic to be here sailing in the nationals, and to showcase the Southport Yacht Club’, Mathew said. ‘The day reflected perfect variable weather conditions for us with strong winds and big waves, typical conditions to what we will expect in the outer courses at the Rio Olympics next year’.
It is also the first time Mathew and Will are sailing against the up and coming sailors of this division. ‘To see the potential competition in the class, drives Will and I to perform better and better each race’, said Mathew.
Sailing is conducted from Southport Yacht Club’s Hollywell Sailing Squadron until Sunday 15th, racing can be viewed from the beaches at Main Beach.
