In recent weeks Olympic Gold and Silver medallist Mathew Belcher OAM has begun mentoring the youth sailors at Southport Yacht Club’s Sailing Academy. On Tuesday 15th November, Mathew selected the first of his sailors to mentor throughout the High Performance Program.
Southport Yacht Club would like to welcome the following junior sailors; Angus Sherring, Sam Martland and Tom Wright to the High Performance Team.
“These three juniors have shown massive potential and dedication to grow within their sailing careers. I look forward to working with them closely in developing their skills in all aspects of on-water training together with a focus on fitness, nutrition, theory and personal development” said Mathew.
Angus has a long history in the Sabot division starting sailing at the age of 5. He won the Sabot Nationals 2up with Jackson Foort in 2014/15. Placing 5th in the Sabots at Queensland youth week and 3rd place at the Sabot Bay Titles at Mooloolaba just last month.
Sam started sailing only two years ago and proved himself as a worthy club sailor by winning the Optimist Club championship and coming 2nd in the junior Club championship. He has gone ahead in leaps and bounds over the past three months and has proved his skills by winning the Queensland Youth Titles in Yeppoon in September.
Tom also began sailing an Optimist, however is currently sailing the Laser 4.7. He had his best achievements on the water in the Open Bic coming 5th in the under 16’s at the world titles in January this year and more recently coming 2nd in the Qld Youth Titles at Yeppoon.
Well done to these three incredible junior sailors, we look forward to seeing your progression improve even more so under the High Performance Mentoring of Mathew Belcher.
