THE WEEK IN SAILING 2nd September 2021
Wednesday, 25th August 2021
Southport Yacht Club’s midweek twilight racing for trailable boats wrapped up today. Despite chillier evenings and unpredicted lockdowns, the winter Brass Monkey series remained popular with a fleet of 30 entrants.
Congratulations to the overall series podium winners.
1st FOX MAY WONDER – 43 points
2nd BABY FACED ASSASSIN – 69 points
3rd DAYTONA – 69 points
Skippers Wayne Horne and Neil Sherring had a cracker of a series bringing FOX MAY WONDER across the final finish line on 43 points. Second place went to Graham Chapman’s BABY FACED ASSASSIN on countback leaving third place to Etchell skipper Peter Yeoman’s DAYTONA. Both received 69 points for the series.
THURSDAY TWILIGHT
Thursday, 26th August 2021
There was no Thursday Twilight racing this week. Instead, skippers met with sailing management for a briefing to discuss the latest amendments to the weekly event.
The evening was a valuable opportunity to reiterate Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) requirements which enable Thursday Twilight racing to be held.
Please refer to the updated Thursday Twilight Sailing Instructions to familiarise yourself with the changes, in particular Clause 3 Communication.
Winners of the Winter Series were also announced this week. There wasn’t much breathing space between our placegetters. All skippers deserve a round of applause not only for their skilful sailing throughout the season but also for the support and encouragement they give their crews.
1st B52 – 53 points
2nd IMPULSE X – 55 POINTS
3rd XVITESSE – 57 points
WINTER PASSAGE – INSHORE DIVISION & OFF THE BEACH CATAMARANS
Saturday, 28th August 2021
Mother Nature always reminds us who is in charge of the elements. Skippers and crew were challenged by light to barely there winds, a contradiction to the forecast 10-15 knots. As all good seamen and women do, they make the most of their time on the water with the conditions they are dealt. The Winter Series results for both divisions are as follows:
Inshore Division
1st KAMIKAZE – 10 points
2nd BETELGEUSE – 13 points
3rd CHILL OUAT – 25 points
Off The Beach Catamarans – Division 1

2nd LOCO (Steve Marlow & Jonathan Simms) – 21 points
3rd FAST ENERGY (Andrew Wilson & Brett Kelly) – 38 points

Off The Beach Catamarans – Division 2
