Inaugural Woman’s and Girls Sailing Regatta
at Humpybong Yacht Club – Woody Point QLD (19th – 20th March)
The 2022 Humpybong Women’s and Girls Regatta proved to be a great weekend for all those in attendance. The all-female competitors took part in the regatta in many different classes, including Tasers, Lasers, Optimists and Vagabonds, with many female skippers stepping up from their usual crewing positions, which was great to see. With challenging conditions on Day 1, with strong swell and gusts of 20 knots, only two races were able to be completed with plenty of swimming for all competitors. Day 2 was much more successful with calmer winds and fewer waves, completing 3 races. There were 3 SYC juniors in attendance: Teegan Mitchell, Jessica Sinnamon and Mila Gan, taking out 1st, 2nd and 4th respectively in Division 5.
A huge congratulations to the young ladies who represented our club so well. A massive thank you to Humpybong Yacht Club for organising such a great event and allowing me the opportunity to be Race Officer for the weekend. Overall, it was a lovely regatta and one that I hope to see running for many years to come in support of women in sailing across the state.
By Grace Murphy.
