60th NSW NS14 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to Michael Spies & Addison Newlan, with an impressive 7^th , competing in the 60th NSW NS14 Championships, held by Port Macquarie Sailing Club last weekend. Well Done!!

THIS WEEK @ OXENFORD WATERSPORT CENTRE AND SQUAD UPDATE

This week at Oxenford Watersports Centre, we reflect on the leaps and bounds our junior sailors have progressed with their sailing. On Saturday we celebrated the completion of sailing academy programs for Term 1 with ‘Bring a Mate’ to sailing with a sausage sizzle and certificate ceremony.

Out There Sailing had a sailing challenge in teams of Hobie Cat Waves and RS Quests, it was the battle of the hulls around the ‘round the cans’ race, deemed the “Chaos Cup.” Armed with wet sponges and water pistols, it added a Pirates of the Caribbean tone to the day.

Tackers 1 & 2 enjoyed the long-awaited day where they would get to trade their Optimist in to sail with their friends on a Hobie Cat. With a parade of sails taking off around the lake, the Tackers sailed to collect sponges on the water in a dodge-ball style sailing game. There’s no better way to celebrate the hard work and progression of a successful term than putting our new skills to practice with a whole lot of fun.

School Holiday Sailing

Our School Holiday Sailing program will be running once again these school holidays! Running on the 3-5th and and 12th-14th April with an option for either half a day or a full day. Get the kids down to Oxenford Lake for some sailing fun on the lake. Parents, you’re welcome to stay and watch the fun whilst relaxing at the Boatshed Brew Cafe with a coffee.

Term 2 programs

We are pleased to announce an additional afternoon class in Term 2 for Out There Sailing (youth aged 12-17 yrs) so that we can accommodate increasing numbers of students.

Transitioning into term 2 at the lake, as we approach Winter, Instructors and participants have already noticed a change in wind patterns. Days are beginning with little to no wind with a slight increase around lunchtime. This time of year is a good way to get a gentle introduction into sailing as light conditions can help ease the anxiety of a nervous beginner, who might have concerns about sailing in stronger winds. It provides different challenges sailors of all abilities can take time to focus on technique, balance and improving sail trim.

SAILOR OF THE WEEK

Congratulations to Teegan Mitchell who has been selected as the Sailor of the Week. Teegan began her sailing journey in Tackers and recently progressed to squad training in a laser at Hollywell. She is a valued member of both the SYC Mentor Program and the She Sails Team at Oxenford helping facilitate learning with sailors of all ages and abilities. Teegan has also recently taken up learning how to windsurf so that she can further her skills and knowledge to support instructors in another wind sport out at Oxenford. Well done Teegan!
