Sailor of the Week

Kate Worboys has been sailing for years through school programs.  She first came to SYC as part of the She Sails program and has progressed to Out There Fleet and Keelboat Sessions at Hollywell.  Kate is now beginning her journey to become a sailing instructor and regularly volunteers at SYC Oxenford.

Teegan Mitchell is part of the laser squad at Hollywell and is a valuable member of the Oxenford She Sails volunteer team. As part of the laser squad she is happy training and competing in club racing & local regattas. Australian Sailing invited her to participate in a SheSails Race Management Day which proved invaluable towards her part of the Race Committee for the SYC Inshore and Offshore & Twilight Racing. She first applied her Race Management skills in Oct 2023 at the Qld Optimist State Titles at Humpybong on the Start/Finish boat for the Open/intermediate course.

Teegan intends on completing her Sailing Instructors Certificate, when she is of age, and aims to secure a Traineeship in Maritime Operations and attain her Coxwains certificate. Congratulations Teegan, we look forward to seeing what 2024 brings for you!

Last She Sails event for 2023

On Sunday 16th December SYC Oxenford held the final She Sails of 2023 with ladies and young girls out on hobie wave catamarans and windsurfing.  It was a very hot day but the wind was kind and kicked in enough to keep everyone cool and having lots of fun and games on the lake.  It’s been wonderful to see Susan Ruck and Patti Hunt, keelboat sailors from Main Beach, join in the sessions as have a wealth of knowledge for our She Sails ladies on where they can go with sailing.  In 2024 we have some exciting ideas and plans for She Sails along with keeping up the monthly sessions at Oxenford.  A huge shout out to all of our regular She Sails volunteers, Ilza & Teegan Mitchell, Jayne & Gabby Latter and Georgia Kelly whose efforts and support make this event the success it is.

Adult Learn to Sail

This week SYC Oxenford held the final 3 day course for Start Sailing 1.  Throughout the three days there were some very light conditions that tested their skills.  We have been really pleased to see a crossover of the programs at Oxenford with participants on this course coming from She Sails, Social Sailing and Keelboat Sessions.

Squad/Out There Camp

This is the last Squad / OutThere program for the year. We had 8 kids attend with the help of Leonie and Sacha, dedicated parents of two of our young sailors, and our Instructors Sam and Mick. They loaded two Ribs from Hollywell and headed to Dux for three days.

We had beautiful days and hot temperatures but fortunately, we had minimal sunburn! The first day we headed to the Pin and enjoyed the afternoon,  watched dolphins play around in the shallows then enjoyed lots of games, Stand Up Paddle boarding and learning the new sport of Wing Supping. On the second day we all enjoyed a big trip up to Peel Island with a high tide, crystal clear water, lots of swimming and learning about Peel’s past  history. The last day was a slow  pack up as everyone was very tired, but we found the energy for a huge group thank you to Brian and Donna who are caretakers of Dux, then enjoyed the big send-off back to Hollywell.
