“The 2024 Surf to City Yacht Race on Saturday was a great race up and around Moreton Island. Many of the boats carrying symmetrical spinnakers chose to hug the shoreline of South and North Stradbroke island, following the rhumb line up the coastline while many of the yachts carrying asymmetrical spinnakers went out wide to the east before gybing into the shore of North Stradbroke or Moreton. Varying wind conditions up the coast from 12kn up to 30kn in the rain squalls that many yachts were caught in made for some great tactical racing from everyone.

On GCCM Arctic Blonde we went out wide to the east, gybing into the northern shores of North Stradbroke before gybing back. Some great wave runners along the coastline around Point lookout and Flat Rock on North Stradbroke in 20-28kn of SSE breeze made for some fast rides before a light patch halfway up Moreton Island slowed everyone down for an hour.

After the top mark of NE2 (North Eastern Moreton Bay shipping Channel marker), a great tack battle was had between a few yachts in the middle pack. A rain squall off the western shores of Moreton followed by a very light patch of breeze just after sunset gave everyone a run for their money and a few boats had to work hard to keep momentum going before the breeze kicked back in for a fast close reach across the bay to the finish.

A great 10-12 hour race for all involved organised by QCYC in conjunction with SYC.”
