News just in from Queensland Sailing, Southport Yacht Club has been named a Club of the Year finalist, and congratulations to the following SYC Members who have been named finalists in the upcoming 2024 Sailing Awards!

Hamilton Island Race Week 2024 – by Barry Schoonenberg

Southport Yacht Club boats and crew are representing very well with some awesome results after day 3 of racing, with a layday Wednesday.After a couple of relatively light days we had a little more steady SE’er in to the mid teens today with some awesome courses. The sailing doesn’t get much better than this, with kings tides, causing some very challenging tactics and calls. Up to 3 knots of current will really mess with you if you get it wrong

Special mention goes to the the teams on Sunfish and Tao who are leading their division with some amazing results.

Avalanche are also coming a fantastic third in their multi hull division and winning with the most “Smiles per mile” again.

Might be a little biased but I think the best racing is happening in cruising yellow with Arctic Blonde Sailing Team, 38 and Makani SailTeam having some incredibly close match racing in one of the toughest divisions here, and proud to say Makani is sitting in 3rd place out of 23 boats. Incredible sailing.

Mr. Commodore and the team on Black Diamond are battling it out in the really tough class of super 40’s and showing some great results so far as well.

So many other SYC crews battling it out up here and having an amazing time on the water.

Sailing at Oxenford

The weather was perfect for our Tackers and OutThere Kids this past weekend. Over the weekend, the wind picked up, our sailors took advantage of the opportunity to demonstrate their skills.

Family Fun Sailing

This week, we had three more families participate in our Family Fun Sailing program. Our families enjoyed spending quality time together on the water with our Hobie boats.

PAWS Dog Sailing

To celebrate International Dog sailing on 25^th August 2024, Oxenford will hold a Paws sailing event allowing our sailors to sail away with their fury first mates. The Event was an absolute blast and perfect day for sailing. The day ended with a little snack for our pups and a picture to remember.

Adults learn to sail.

As part of the Adult Learn to Sail session two, all of our sailors took to the water on Sunday and got a feel for the boats. We are excited to see them for their last session.

Sailor of the week

We are pleased to announce Seth Simpson as this week’s Sailor of the Week! In Tackers 2, Seth has shown a great lot of passion and enthusiasm in sailing. Seth is showing great leadership abilities and continues to grow very well.

We are eager to see Seth’s sailing abilities develop.
