SYC AFIELD: HAMILTON ISLAND RACE WEEK 2024 – Words by Barry Schoonenberg
Hamilton Island race week 2024 done!! What an incredible week of racing around these amazing islands. With mostly steady 10 to 15 knots each day and king tides, the currents and massive wind shifts through the fleets made for some of the most challenging but rewarding racing.
The first half of the week was steady sailing with the usual entertainment in the Dent passage start lines with sometimes up to 3 knots of current washing over the line, the odd whale on starboard tack and the planes flying through as well. So good.
Layday was a fun time, with many boats choosing to have a couple “Quiet” beverages at Whitehaven beach.. and then the pool party at the resort.
Day 5 had a very light breeze and for many fleets a shortened course after battling through Fitzalen Passage against strong tides.
Day 6 was by far the most stunning day on the water, steady 12 to 15 knots of trade breeze and an awesome course selection for many divisions around Lindeman Island and then a magnificent kite run home. Amazing to look around and see around 100 kites coming up the channel to the finish line.
Southport Yacht Club Boats and crew represented incredibly well over the week long regatta.
Incredibly close racing in the Super 40 fleet with Mr. Commodore and the team on Black Diamond racing in a tough fleet with only seconds between places each day. Some excellent competition in each race there.
- Holy Cow 13th In Pink Division
- Sunfish 7th in Orange Division
- Avalanche a fantastic 3rd & 4th overall in their Multi Divisions
- Tao topped the SYC boats results with an incredible 1st place overall in the 18 strong Multi Hull White division.
For the three SYC boats in the Fluoro Yellow Division – Peter Cook & Arctic Blonde Sailing Team, Greg Tobin with 38, and myself on Makani had a fantastic battle every day in a fleet of 23 boats. The tack for tack match racing style battles around the islands, the close call kite runs and the camaraderie on shore each afternoon swapping stories and comparing calls and tactics made for arguably the best Hamilton island race week I can remember. It sure was for our team. Makani taking out 5th overall from 23 in yellow division.
To all the other SYC crew racing on many other boats here, plenty of incredible results throughout. We were incredibly well represented and everyone did the club proud. Amazing week!!
