Last Thursday several of the Southport Yacht Club (SYC) Hollywell JaM fleet sailed with the Thursday Twilight fleet for the inaugural SYC Charity Cup, being the first Club in Queensland to contribute and support the new state wide partnership Caithness, a charity race raising funds for Melanoma Patients Australia (MPA).
MPA was co-founded by our very own Pontoon member Daniel Belcher, Daniel travelled from Sydney to join the race and sailed aboard the Etchells Daytona to finish in 2nd place.
The race was won by John Kearney in Aqueous Humour with Doug Brown in Quarter Flash in 3rd- Simon Turpin said that the first 3 boats were the only boats to take the advantage of a tide effect from the Mud Island sand banks together with a wind shift.
With a number of crews paying a minimum of $20 to sail within the event together with a raffle and sausage sizzle, almost $3,000 was raised for MPA.
Olympian and Commonwealth Games medallist Julie McDonald who is also on the Board of MPA had her first sail and enjoyed her race aboard immensely.
