JUNIOR SAILING AND OXENFORD WATERSPORTS UPDATE
We will now be providing a little weekly update on what’s happening on and off the water at Oxenford including a Junior Sailing Update – provided by Challenge Wells (Sailing Co-ordinator)
Gold Coast Show Update
Huge thanks to our Mentors, Parents and the Sailing Team for their assistance at the Gold Coast Show this past weekend.
Southport Yacht Club offered Free Sailing on Hobie Wave Catamarans for juniors 7-15 years.
It was a great turnout and response from the community – no one could believe it was free! – there were a few confused parents at first and we had all up over 100 participants over the 3 days of the show.
Special shout out to our Instructors Grace, Jasmine, Chelsea and Jack, and Mentors Joe, Ethan and Lucas for all their help – it would not have been possible without all your input.
Oxenford Lake
Out There! Sailing
This term we have started our first “Out There Sailing Program” for teens aged 12-17 years and we had 14 participants for our first course/program.
What is Out There Sailing? Out There Sailing is a “Learn To Sail Program”, designed to get older kids who have never sailed before into the sport – most of the participants are in their teens. Statistically, teens are unlikely to start a new sport, especially sailing (as they have usually already found their preferred sport by that age).
Why is this a big deal? To have filled the first term, gives us a great starting point to develop the program further and get even more kids into sailing. This is a great accomplishment for the Sailing Academy, and so much potential for the future.

SHE SAILS
She Sails is ramping up as we move into the warmer months. Come enjoy a relaxed afternoon sail with the ladies on Sunday 11th September 12pm-3pm.
We’ll be sailing the Hobie Catamarans at Oxenford Lake, followed by social drinks. More details can be found Here.
Junior Sailor of the Week
| Joe Thompson | Age: 13 | Sailing Since Oct 2020 |
Joe and his brother first started sailing by attending the 2-day Southport Yacht Club School Holiday Sailing Program.
The two brothers had such a great time, they decided to join Tackers 1 at Oxenford Lake in October 2020 to continue their sailing journey.
After thoroughly enjoying all Tackers Programs (1,2 and 3) last year, Joe progressed to Fleet and Squad Training out of Hollywell, which enabled him to not only continue his fun sailing journey, but to increase his skills in terms of tides, winds and water traffic.
It wasn’t long before he went from sailing in an Opti to sailing in a Laser and from there, it was a natural progression to commence Club Racing.
Joe also decided to give Volunteering a go as a way to grow and give back to the Tackers Program and to share the skills he had previously learnt.
Joe loves sailing and the team environment and community at Southport Yacht Club.
Joe recently acquired his own Laser, which he named “It’s a Breeze”, and he looks forward to his first trip north, heading up to Yeppoon to participate in the QLD Youth Champs in September.

Next Saturday 10th September is our annual Sail Past and Blessing of the Fleet Event.
The Challenge is on again between the Power Boat Division and Sailing for Attendance and Best Dressed Bragging Rights!
