QOIN SAIL PARADISE 2023 AND THE SUMMER OF SAILING SERIES AUSTRALIA
MEDIA RELEASE – QOIN SAIL PARADISE 2023
QOIN SAIL PARADISE 2023 – ENTRY RUSH!
An early rush of entries, propelled by enthusiastic skippers and crew, confirms that Southport Yacht Club’s Qoin Sail Paradise offshore yacht regatta is destined to be bigger and better than ever come January 2023.
It is already confirmed that 26 of the best Grand Prix level offshore racing yachts from Brisbane, the Gold Coast and beyond, have entered Qoin Sail Paradise 2023 and with the extended 5-day format, which includes the flexible Lay Day excursion to Southport Yacht Clubs exclusive Dux Anchorage Island Retreat at South Stradbroke Island, a Welcome Beach Party, a special Sailors Partner Luncheon, Live Entertainment and Big Screen Daily Live Action Feeds – the event is ‘jam packed’ full of sailing and social activities for sailors, their crew and families.
The racecourses are designed to suit the conditions on each race day and are set in close proximity to the Gold Coast’s stunning, golden sandy beaches and may extend as far south to the QLD/NSW border.
“Exciting racing on the water and an equally satisfying social agenda at Southport Yacht Club’s waterfront Race Headquarters at Main Beach, will provide the perfect combination for good times and great entertainment”, said Southport Yacht Club’s Commodore, Drew Jones.
Early this year it was announced that Qoin Sail Paradise 2023 will now be the flagship event of The Summer of Sailing Series Australia (SSSA) an annual premier Sailing Series of 6 Events, jointly hosted by Southport Yacht Club (SYC) Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS) and Queensland Cruising Yacht Club (QCYC).
“Skippers who crave even more ‘summer sailing competition’ are jumping on board and entering the series, to take full advantage of the series bonuses of Free Berthing at SYC, $1,000 SYC Club Cash (3+ events) and potential Trophy Accolades and Bragging Rights for both Qoin Sail Paradise 2023 and SSSA” said SYCs Vice Commodore of Sail Glenn Burrell.
“We are delighted that our partnering clubs QCYC and RQYS agreed to be a part of our series, which is now attracting more interest due to the bonus opportunities now available to a wider array of yacht categories, said SYC Sailing Operations Manager Simon Turpin.

SYC REPRESENTATIVES UPDATE
2022 Australian Sailing Youth Sail Queensland – Yeppoon.
Update By Grace Murphy – Head Coach
The 2022 Youth Sail Champs held at Keppel Bay Sailing Club was once again, a huge success. With 19 of our youth sailors making their way to Yeppoon, split between Green Fleet, Optimists, O’Pen Skiffs, RS Fevas and Lasers, it was one of our largest turnouts for any regatta.
The 3 day training camp held beforehand allowed our sailors to improve all of their skills within their class and racing tactics. The growth shown in all the kids was astronomical and all of their coaches had nothing but positive feedback about the improvement, work ethic and behaviour of the SYC sailors.
The regatta proved a challenge for many of our sailors, with strong winds and massive swell on day 1 and light winds on day 2 and 3. We can see the improvements in results over the days of racing, with all the kids really taking on board the feedback from the SYC on-water coaches. While some of our sailors frequented the protest room or were brought down by injuries, we also saw many brilliant results. Jack McGuire won his first race in Green Fleet and Nathaniel McCarthy won the last race in Optimist Intermediates. Addison Greenwood managed to place 3rd in her Green Fleet division. Jessie Sinnamon won First Girl in Optimist Intermediates and Lucas Dickson won Best Sailor under 9 in the Optimist Open Division.
All in all, while the improvements and results are brilliant across the board, the best part of the event, from a coach’s point of view, is the comradery formed between all the sailors.
Many club dinners were had, laughs at briefing, trivia nights and even a few cheeky cocktails shared amongst parents while the kids were on the water. Team SYC showed up stronger than ever and we are all looking forward to returning next year, hopefully with even bigger numbers.
