SYC REPRESENTATIVE UPDATE
2022 NSW Youth Championships Training and Regatta – Point Wolstoncroft NSW
Regatta Wrap Up – by Addison Newlan
I recently attended the Australian Sailing NSW Youth State Championships, sailing on beautiful Lake Macquarie at Point Wolstoncroft.
There was a mix of classes, including sailors from interstate and two international competitors.
With 22 O’pen skiffs there was great competition and comradery within the fleet. Much was learnt and improved upon over the three days of heavy wind training, one of which consisted of theory due to damaging winds and squalls.
Following the training, I then competed in the NSW State Regatta, where the first two days we saw strong to moderate winds, alongside shifty conditions. However, the last days racing was postponed until just after 12.30pm with glass out conditions and shifty winds – we then got two races in before the 3pm last start signal. This meant that we got the intended 9 races in total and a wide variety of conditions.
This regatta was a great learning curve for me and worth the drive!!!

2022 Australian Sailing Youth Sail Queensland – Yeppoon
Regatta Wrap Up – by Lewis Falconer (Junior Commodore)
Southport Yacht Club was well represented in the recent 2022 Australian Sailing Youth Sail Queensland event, which included a three day coaching camp with Queenslands top coaches followed by a three day Queensland Youth Championship Regatta.
We encountered very different conditions over the days, which tested our sailing abilities to the limit; a thick sea fog, strong winds with massive steep waves, and light variable winds.
This event caters for all abilities with Green fleet sailing on the nearby protected Causeway Lake and the rest of the sailing team in the open waters of the bay.
There were at least 20 sailors from SYC that competed in the regatta.
Overall, the experience was tremendous and we all loved learning new skills, building new friendships and most of all having fun sailing.
Some of the great results were Jess Sinnamon as female age champion Opti, Myles Wilson towards the top of the fleet Laser Radial, Greenfleeter Addison Greenwood getting third place, and Toby Prendergast battling injury to stay on the water.
We all appreciated the assistance and support from the coaches and the parents before, during, and after the sailing days.
It was a brilliant turnout by SYC with some great sailing.
Hopefully more sailors will compete in 2023 and I can’t wait for more fast and fun sailing.

Sailor of the Week is SELAH!
Last week OTBC’s racing on Saturday saw strong winds and a number of on-water issues, including a couple of capsizes in the Broadwater. The conditions were somewhat dangerous and ever changing.
Selah assessed a certain safety situation on the day and went above and beyond to assist a sailor in need – jumping in the choppy, swelly and windy Broadwater to help with an overturned Cat.
Selah, recently completed his Certificate III in Sport & Recreation through Southport Yacht Club and his High School and having gained this qualification (and many skills along the way),
Selah has now commenced his Sailing Instructor journey under the guidance of his fellow Sailing Instructor peers at the Club.
THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO SELAH!
