SYC LOOKS FORWARD TO HOSTING THE 54th NS14 AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS IN JANUARY 2024

In order to meet the demand for a low-cost senior dinghy class for Southport Yacht Club members, SYC has decided to get behind the NS14 class. These 2 person high-performance dinghies are competitively sailed by a wide range of combinations from Father /Son, Mother/ Daughter, Husband / Wife or 2 teenagers.

SYC has previously held the Australian Championships for this class in 1977 and we are looking forward to hosting the 54th Australian Championships in January 2024. This has lead to the local fleet slowly building up in regular club racing.

To encourage participation for all levels of sailors the club is going to put focus on Handicap Racing as well as Championships. There are competitive reliable entry-level boats available now for as little as $1,500.00 which is a lot of boat for so little money. Get in touch with the Sailing Office if you want to be part of this exciting class. Your fellow competitors will be the first to give you any help or assistance you need to get out on the water.

Sails Set

With lots of exciting plans ahead for 2023, Wednesday 1st February saw sailing courses at SYC Oxenford start set sail. The first group to be welcomed back were our homeschool students followed on Saturday by a group of adult Scout leaders along with past and new participants in our Tackers and Out There Sailing programs. Despite the light wind conditions, our sailors demonstrated their ability to make the most of unpredictable weather conditions by participating and having fun with all the activities on offer.

A reminder that ongoing every Saturday, SYC Oxenford is offering junior sailors the opportunity to come and try sailing.

Session times are: 8.30-9.30, 10.30-11.30, 12-1pm & 2-3pm

Participants can only register for one event. This is an excellent opportunity to give youth from 7yrs+ the opportunity to go sailing with one of our mentors before committing to a course.

SAILOR OF THE WEEK

Congratulations to Finntin Griffin who is our Sailor of the Week! Finn joined the junior fleet this week after completing Tackers 1-3 and green fleet. He is showing great potential with skill improvement and depth of knowledge as well as having an infectious enthusiasm for being on the water sailing. Well done Finn, we look forward to seeing your continued progression.
