The inaugural Para Sailing International Championships for Athletes with Intellectual Impairment will be held at Southport Yacht Club in November 2022.  

The event is being held in conjunction with the Virtus Oceania Asia Games with most of the other sports (and the Opening & Closing Ceremonies) being conducted in Brisbane.  

This is a significant event, being the first championship sanctioned by World Sailing for this athlete group. 

Many people with intellectual impairment participate in sailing, often through Sailability or community sailing programs, currently only compete in inclusive open events in small numbers. 

This event is an important step toward establishing an international competition pathway for these athletes.

The event includes two Championship disciplines (for 1 person and 2 person crews), where competitors have eligible intellectual impairment under the Virtus Int requirements. There is an additional Championship (2 person supported), where only 1 of the competitors have eligible intellectual impairment.  The latter enables athletes with more significant intellectual impairment, or those who are still developing their confidence, to participate while supported in the boat by a person without intellectual impairment.

EVENT ELIGIBILITY

The International Championship is open to eligible sailors who are listed on the Virtus Master List, prior to competing in the Hansa 303 class event. 

There are 2 Entry Options, both of which require MANDATORY Virtus Eligibility and the allocation of an Virtus Eligibility Number
