This Week in Sailing – 26th August 2021
With Queensland Government’s restrictions on community sports, the Sailing Squadron has been a lot quieter than usual for the past two weeks. In the office, however, Simon and Karen have been reworking the sailing calendar to ensure sailors still get the most out of the series and where possible, regattas are postponed and not cancelled. The government eased COVID restrictions earlier than expected and sailors were on the phone keen to get back on the water.
Saturday, 21st August 2021
A gorgeous day to send off community sport lockdown. Between the two divisions racing, we had 19 boats in total.
INSHORE DIVISION
Congratulations to the division rep Ross Manning, taking first place on his Skud18 RETOX. Second place went to Matt Davidson
and crew on RUSHER followed by the lovely Etchell, BETELGEUSE. Well done Greg Forgan-Smith and crew.
OFF THE BEACH CATAMARANS
The multihull division was eager to get back onto the Broadwater, making up 13 of the 19-boat fleet this weekend.
Division 1 placings were shared between LOCO, 114 and SEVEN.
Race 14: 1st LOCO – 2nd 114 – 3rd SEVEN
Race 15: 1st SEVEN – 2nd LOCO – 3rd 114
Division 2 was a different story with the podium shared by six skippers.
Race 14: 1st CHARACINIII – 2nd TONIC – 3rd RUMPLETEAZER
Race 15: 1st BELLELA – 2nd THE JOKER – 3rd WAKA TAUA
If you are ever looking for something to do on a Saturday, pop down to Hollywell by 11:30 am to see the start of weekend sailing. It’s always a colourful event with the bright sails of the cats racing up the Broadwater.

OFFSHORE DIVISION
With the unexpected restrictions lifting earlier than anticipated a lot of our Offshore fleet had made other plans. We still had the required five boats to get the race underway. It was a glamorous day out on the ocean.
Division 1: 1st ENVY – 2nd KERISMA – 3rd BLACK DIAMOND
In Division 2 the spotlight was only on SUELLA today. A fitting end of the season race for 2020/21 Most Improved Skipper Carlos Selby who has had another cracker of a series.
OFF THE BEACH DINGHIES
Open Division Twelve boats joined us for racing on Sunday at Hollywell. It was a spectacular day with some great racing and the prizes being shared between three boats over two races. Congratulations Kelvin Holdt who dominated the field today.
Race 5: 1st GREEN EGGS & HAM – 2nd TRUE BLUE – 3rd NANNI
Race 6: 1st GREEN EGGS & HAM – 2nd NANNI – 3rd TRUE BLUE
Junior Division
It was dejavu on the water for our younger dinghy sailors. Jonah, Addison and Matthew competed in the two races and their placings remained the same for both.
1st THE WHALE (Jonah) – 2nd AFTERBURNER (Addison) – 3rd SAFARI (Matthew)
Well done sailors! It was a pleasure to see you racing again.
AIRLIE BEACH RACE WEEK
After a tough and disappointing decision for organisers, Hamilton Island Race Week 2021 was cancelled due to the instability of COVID on the east coast of Australia. Like so many sailing clubs worldwide, COVID has had a way of unfurling our best-laid plans for our most popular regattas.
Whitsunday Sailing Club had a lucky break this year and was able to hold their Airlie Beach Race Week 12-19th August. Southport Yacht Club was represented by two of our regular club competitors; MISTER BOJANGLES and SHE.
Congratulations Mike Small and crew who took out 4th place in the Performance Cruising Division 2 on MISTER BOJANGLES.
An awesome effort by Phillip Bell and crew on SHE, coming in 7th in the Performance Cruising Division 3 class.
That covers the week in racing. It’s great to be back on the water.
Fair winds and we’ll see you next week.
