NATIONAL FINALIST – NEIL ROWSTHORN – PARA SAILOR OF THE YEAR
National Finalists Announced for Para Sailor of the Year – Published Fri 14 Oct 2022
Three outstanding sailors from across Australia have been announced as national finalists in the Para Sailor of the Year category, with the winner to be announced at the Australian Sailing Awards on November 4.
The first of the finalists, Neil Rowsthorn has been on the committee of Sailability Gold Coast and helped establish the Queensland Para Sailing Academy at Southport Yacht Club. Congratulations from all of us at Southport Yacht Club Neil….you’re already a winner in our eyes….
Neil has chased competition in all the Hansa classes – 2.3, 303 and Liberty – around Australia and overseas with another successful season.
Neil finished third at the Hansa Nationals – Liberty Class and second at the SKUD 18 Nationals before stringing together a series of wins and placings in the Southport YC inshore division JAM series as well as the summer and winter SYC ID Series.
Along with crew Jack Wallace, he continues honing his racing skills with the SKUD 18, sports boat and keelboat fleets at Southport.
Neil is Secretary of the Queensland Para Sailing Academy, and volunteers at Sailability Gold Coast two-three days per week.
He has also sailed more Southport YC Inshore division races than any other sailor.

THIS WEEK @ OXENFORD WATERSPORT CENTRE
Junior Sailing Programs
Our Junior Sail programs started back up. Heavy winds on the first day.
The Tackers 1 Course commenced with 50% of the kids being female (you go girls!). Sailing out at Oxenford has predominantly been a male dominated take up and in general it seems a male dominated sport – so we are super excited to have more young women come through! Let’s help support our female sailors in their journey.
Wind Surfing
Australian Sailing has loaned Southport Yacht Club Oxenford 12 Wind Surf Board to be used for our Learn to Wind Surf Courses. The Sailing Team have been practicing to qualify for their instructor qualification. The first course is set to start early December – so stay tuned for more details. The Sailing Team did some ‘trial runs’ on the Wind Surfs this week (it was a bit of fun).
Thank you to all our Mentors who help support our programs this past weekend – it would not have been as grand without you – you guys ROCK!
Sailor of the Week is Emerson Wheeler
Emerson always jumps in to help and is always up to volunteer. He has been volunteering as a Mentor at Oxenford now for a few months and we can always count on him to get the job done. He’s proactive, intuitive, and fast. – a true asset to our club!
