QOIN SAIL PARADISE 2023
THE PARA WORLD SAILING CHAMPIONSHIPS
We have been privileged this week to host and get to know competitors and their families of the Para World Sailing International Championships. This has been a significant event, being the first championship sanctioned by World Sailing for this athlete group. Many people with intellectual impairment participate in sailing, often through Sailability or community sailing programs, currently only compete in inclusive open events in small numbers. This event is an important step toward establishing an international competition pathway for these athletes.
The event includes two Championship disciplines (for 1 person and 2 person crews), where competitors have eligible intellectual impairment under the Virtus Int requirements. There is an additional Championship (2 person supported), where only 1 of the competitors have eligible intellectual impairment. The latter enables athletes with more significant intellectual impairment, or those who are still developing their confidence, to participate while supported in the boat by a person without intellectual impairment.
Southport Yacht Club congratulates all competitors and winners and huge thanks to our Sailability Friends, for all their support and for also competing in the Hansa 303 Gold Coast Championships along side our Para World Sailing friends.

THIS WEEK @ OXENFORD WATERSPORT CENTRE AND SQUAD UPDATE
Update provided by Michaela Hanson & Jasmin Ruck
BE PART OF THE SYC FAMILY!
It’s not necessarily participating in a sailing course that leaves a lasting impression, it’s more often the people you meet and the experience you have with staff, mentors and volunteers. No matter your reason for joining us at Oxenford Watersports Centre, we strive to make your experience positive. As your hosts, we welcome you to chat with any of our friendly staff and offer constructive feedback. Feedback is a helpful tool that supports the way we move forward to improve on what we provide to you, our customers.
Work without fun is like toast without butter. When we can, our staff, mentors and volunteers at SYC Oxenford not only work together but play together. This week, some of our team went for an early morning surf and later in the week we held an impromptu social with parents and students after lessons. If you’re interested in being part of our team in any capacity, we’d love to hear from you.
Land drills build skills!
At any age, learning skills on land can pay dividends when you get on the water. With winds a bit strong, our instructors took the opportunity to go through how to tack, gybe, tie knots and run sailing orientated beach games.
Sailor of the Week
This week our team has identified Reuban Dart as Sailor of the Week, congratulations Reuban!
Reuban attends the Out There Sailing experience program. This week the course participants were challenged to practise tying their figure-of-8, reef knot and bowline with their eyes closed! We know that progress = practice in all conditions, including restricted visibility.
Reuban demonstrated a positive approach to the land skills learning activity and the right attitude helping others when needed. Well done from the SYC team Ruben, you’re steering yourself in the right direction.
