2021/22 Sailing Presentation Night

What a night! Celebrating the achievements of all sailors and crews in the 2021/22 sailing season

This year’s Roy Holdt Memorial Trophy – Noel Gatland. Noel is a true Gentleman, a selfless volunteer, and an amazing family man, he’s one of the kindest people you’ll ever meet. It’s guys like Noel that keep our club ticking along. We appreciate all of Noel’s efforts and the countless hours of volunteering he has given to the club – we’re very thankful to have him as a part of our family. Congratulations Noel!

This year’s Kellond-Knight Family Shield Trophy – Addison Newlan. Addy shows a level of maturity, diplomacy, and skills well and truly beyond her years and Southport Yacht Club could not ask for a more impressive competitor when it comes to state and national representation for our club. Addy is our Junior Vice Commodore, a regular volunteer, she trains multiple days a week, races in her own divisions and regularly represents other divisions as crew, is a Champion in a number of state and national regattas for the season 21/22 and has ambitions of representing Australia at the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane – we’re all behind you Addy! – Congratulations!

This year’s Vice Commodore’s Trophy – Ben Downey – a true character of our club, who continuously contributes to all of the above. Ben is super special, assists the juniors at SYC and the club are lucky to have him and his passion for our sport of sailing – we love you, Ben!”

This year’s Geoff Courtis Memorial Trophy – Kelvin Holdt encompasses all the traits of a wonderful sailor and committed club member. Kelvin is the first port of call for many of our junior sailors (and not so junior sailors, he’s also a great mentor for those new to sport. Kelvin has also greatly contributed to the management and running of the clubs Sailing Office in a previous life, so his understanding of the behind the scenes and race management is exceptional. Kelvin was instrumental in activating the OK Dinghy’s and Paper Tiger competitions at SYC and continuously took time to think about and assist the club in several areas – including Volunteering Training where he would purposely (and unexpectedly) capsize his boat during racing, so that volunteers could learn the right way to approach, rescue and recover. A true character, a regular at the bar and a continual deliverer of cheeky and naughty comments……it’s guys like Kelvin that create our fantastic culture and club spirit and we’re grateful he’s a part of the crew. Congratulations Kelvin!
