Youth Weekend Regatta Report
On the weekend of 11th/12th July, the annual Youth Week Regatta was held by RQYS. Being the first regatta since Covid-19, a shortened version of the event challenged our SYC team with light to moderate shifty winds. SYC had representation in Laser’s, Open Skiff, 420 and Optimist classes.
Day one was a slow start with a practice launch and tow, as by the timewe got our sailors out to the course the wind had glassed out and we returned to wait for better conditions. When the breeze returned our sailors fired early getting race wins in the Laser Radial, Laser 4.7, 420 and Open Skiff.
Good consistent results at Days end had Leigh Lomas tied for first in the Radials with Sam Marland in 4th with consistent results.
Our Optimist representation came from Mathew Sinnamon sailing in the Intermediate fleet. Good consistent results had him 7th overall by the end of day one but very close scores allowing for positional gains on day two.
In the Open Skiff (Addison Newlan) and 420 (Angus Sherring/Blake Wilson), low fleet numbers had them in mixed classes racing but all sailed well using the opportunity to practice the racing skills that have been missing due to lockdown.
Day two was more of snakes and ladders race day, big wind shifts and rain cloud made for constantly changing conditions and the early westerly breezes started out at 13knots but dropped out over the course of the day to be light and fickle by end of racing.
Mathew Sinnamon had a better day on the results sheet to move from 7th overnight to 4th at end of regatta – just 2 points of the podium.
Sam Marland again had consistent results but a few average starts made it difficult to improve on the scoreboard, but still sailed well to get some quality close fleet racing in.
Leigh Lomas had another good day matching his form on day one, a 5th and 2nd holding him to the same score as the regatta winner and finishing a creditable 2nd Place.
In the laser 4.7 class, it was Angus Wheatly who was the highest placed SYC sailor with 2nd overall and Siska DuPont Berry in 7th.
Overall a very good weekend of sailing with some good lessons to take away and some skills to improve on as they built to the next events.
