SPECIAL EVENTS
The Edinburg Cup for Classic Moths
Update Courtesy Michael Spies
Southport Yacht Club hosted the Arcus Edinburgh Cup for Classic Moths over the weekend. Seventeen scows from various eras and periods of development from around the country were entered for the 2 day event. Saturday saw 4 races held in a building sea breeze. After the points were tallied after the first day, it was Phil Colvin from myself sailing my Imperium and Warwick Norton in Horace 3rd. Gear failure and damage to the the first 2 boats saw the reliable Warwick Norton take the Arcus Edinburgh Cup through a combination of consistency, reliability, boat speed and good tactical sailing. The final days 3 races however were dominated by 14 year old Addison Newlan with 3 wins, sailing Gazelle which, won the inaugural Edinburgh Cup in 1964, she showed the beautiful Cedar and Ash transom to all her rivals. Gazelle’s builder, designer and skipper Nev Ferguson was on hand to present the Edinburgh Cup, which he kindly donated back as a PerpeTual trophy. It was fantastic to have Phil Keir (son of legendary Moth builder Stumpy Keir), acting as Chief Race Officer. A huge shout out to Arcus, Southport Yacht Clubs Sailing Team and all the Volunteers and supporters, who made the event so successful.

THIS WEEK @ OXENFORD WATERSPORT CENTRE AND SQUAD UPDATE
Seas the end of Spring! There’s nothing quite like sunshine, fresh air and the water. Summer is creeping its way around the corner, the weather is warming up and we’ve been getting some sensational days for the junior and adult learn to sail programs at Oxenford Watersports Centre.
As part of the Out There Sailing Experience, this week we began to introduce students to windsurfing.
We were really excited to see all of them step outside their comfort zone and try something new. Some of the students took to it like a duck to water and expressed keen interest to continue the activity in the coming weeks.
Out There Sailing isn’t just about sailing, it’s about trying new things and having fun with friends along the way.

Sailor’s of the Week
Congratulations to Chantelle and Crystal Nalder from Tackers 1!
Sailing conditions on the water can change or shift at any point. To a young sailor or beginner of any age it can be disconcerting and scary often resulting in overwhelming fear. Chantelle and Crystal experienced this first hand this week. After a short inspirational encouraging pep talk from our instructors they rejoined the class and had a whale of a time. Ladies, we admire your courage to face your fears head on and overcome them.
